The
PhotoTherapy Centre opened in 1982 in Vancouver, Canada.
It is not a "Center" in the sense of having lots of people
working there, but rather in the sense that it serves
as the worldwide resource base for the field of PhotoTherapy
-- including being the consulting and training
office (and occasional supervision site) for its Director,
psychologist and art therapist Judy
Weiser (who until 2002, also conducted her
psychotherapy practice there).
The
Centre holds a library of several hundred PhotoTherapy-related
articles and books, as well as dozens of Student
Theses and Dissertations, along with numerous photo-based
creations made by clients or trainees, videotapes of "live" client
or training sessions which have been released for
viewing, along with
other photographic and video material (including training
tapes) about PhotoTherapy in general.
Also
available for viewing there are many original photographs
taken by some of the pioneers
of PhotoTherapy (many of whom are also professional or fine
arts photographers) as well as a selection of writings and
original photographs by many people working in related fields
such as Therapeutic Photography,
Visual Sociology, or Photographic Cultural Studies. Additionally,
all back issues of the journal PhotoTherapy
(no longer published) are available there for reading or
purchasing at cost.
Basically,
the Centre's files and collections ARE the PhotoTherapy
Archives!
The
PhotoTherapy Centre also provides both on-site and at-distance
training opportunities for mental
health professionals wanting to learn how to use PhotoTherapy
techniques in their own therapeutic practice. It also assists
with student research and
further development of the field, through ongoing networking,
consulting, and mentoring. Thesis or independent project
guidance and practicum supervision can also be arranged.
Although
PhotoTherapy techniques are to be used only by trained mental
health professionals, the simple sharing of information
with the general public about how PhotoTherapy works
is well within the guidelines of the Centre's practice,
and thus invitations are also accepted to provide general
introductory-level information to non-professional audiences
such as art gallery lectures, personal-growth workshops,
photo hobby clubs, communications students, photo-product
companies, and similar venues or businesses wishing to benefit
from knowing more about the "secret lives" of ordinary people's
personal snapshots and family photos.
